Justin Fields Signs with New York Jets in Two-Year, $40 Million Deal

Justin Fields has officially found a new home in the AFC East with the New York Jets.

The 26-year-old quarterback has been reaffirmed as the team’s starter and secured a two-year deal worth up to $40 million, including $30 million guaranteed. Reports suggest that Fields chose the Jets over the Pittsburgh Steelers, who did not offer guaranteed money in the second year of their proposal.

Fields was replaced by veteran quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 7 last season. While the decision was made for the betterment of the team, some fans argued that Fields, who had a 4-2 record as a starter, should have remained in the lineup. Though he remained active in the offense, his role significantly diminished, leaving a noticeable void.

Now with the Jets, Fields is expected to develop chemistry with star wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who finished last season with 101 receptions for 1,104 yards and seven touchdowns. The addition of Fields, known for his dual-threat ability, paired with running back Breece Hall, is expected to excite Jets fans after Hall’s strong third season.

However, the pressure is on for Fields to deliver. This marks his third team in a young NFL career where he has yet to be firmly established as a franchise quarterback. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith commented on First Take that this season could be a make-or-break moment for Fields.

“I think his career is on the line,” Smith said. “Here you are in New York—those would be three franchises. If it doesn’t work here, I’m not trying to say that his career would be over, that’s not what I mean by it. I simply mean that looking at him as a starter in the National Football League, as the face behind center for a franchise, I think that narrative will come to an end if he doesn’t succeed here.”

Fields is undoubtedly aware of the stakes and knows that a strong performance is critical to proving he belongs as a starting quarterback in the NFL.
