In a recent court hearing, Harvey Weinstein faced New York prosecutors for the first time since his 2020 sex crime conviction was overturned. Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg expressed the intention to retry Weinstein, targeting an early fall date, possibly by September.
Weinstein’s conviction had been a monumental event in the MeToo movement, which gained immense traction in 2017 after several women accused him of sexual abuse. However, the New York State Court of Appeals recently nullified this conviction, citing an unfair trial influenced by testimonies unrelated to the criminal charges.
Despite the setback in New York, Weinstein is still serving a 16-year sentence in California for separate sex crime convictions in 2022.
The decision to retry comes from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, determined to bring Weinstein back to court. Actress Jessica Mann, a pivotal witness in the 2020 trial, attended the hearing, signaling her readiness to testify again despite the emotional toll it previously took on her.
Weinstein remains under medical care at Bellevue Hospital following his conviction’s reversal, dealing with heart and auditory issues. His next appearance in court is scheduled for May 29.
