A town official in Chester, New York, has been arrested after allegedly shooting a DoorDash driver who got lost and approached his home for directions.

John Reilly, the town’s highway superintendent and a licensed firearms dealer, was charged with first-degree assault and criminal possession of a firearm.
According to state police, the driver had become lost Friday night while trying to deliver food and “approached several homes asking for directions before arriving at Reilly’s residence.” Police say Reilly “told the victim to get off his property, before firing multiple shots at the victim as he attempted to leave in his vehicle, striking the victim once in the back, causing serious physical injuries.”
Reilly, 48, was taken to the Orange County Jail on $250,000 cash bail, $500,000 bond, or $750,000 partially secured bond. A preliminary hearing is set for May 9th.
Chester Town Supervisor Brandon Holdridge posted a statement saying town leaders were “deeply troubled” and wished the driver a “full and healthy recovery.” However, Holdridge noted the town cannot remove Reilly since he is an elected official, and the local police have recused themselves from the case.
DoorDash called the incident a “senseless act of violence” and added, “No one should ever fear for their safety just for trying to make deliveries in their neighborhood.” The company said it will continue cooperating with investigators.
As of Monday, Reilly could not be reached, and no lawyer information was available. The case is not yet listed in the state court’s database.
