This tentative settlement of $765 million dollars comes one week before the National Football League starts its regular football season. The breakdown of the $765 million dollar settlement is:
$7.5 Million goes towards Medical Exams for Concussions
$10 Million goes towards Research/Education about Concussions
$675 Million will be dispersed amongst the 4,500 players who sued & sustained concussions in their careers for Medical Treatment
According to the Washington Post, the high-profile former players whose names were attached to the lawsuit were Jim McMahon, Tony Dorsett, Clinton Portis, Mark Rypien and Art Monk. The family of Junior Seau, the former San Diego Chargers linebacker who committed suicide in May 2012, also had joined the suit. Former Atlanta Falcons safety Ray Easterling, who filed the first lawsuit two years ago and was the lead plaintiff, committed suicide in April 2012.
Art Monk was enshrined last night along with 23 former college football players and coaches at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia. The discussion about the NFL Concussion lawsuits and new rules to protect the College football players was extensive last night. Hopefully this settlement will be approved and bring relief to the players involved and peace to their families.
