Football official Sarah Thomas is making history. She just became the first female to get hired for a full-time position as an official for the NFL. In an entirely male-dominated industry, it has taken her years of hard work to get to where she is today. Back in 2013, the NFL’s VP of officiating, Dean Blandino, said that they were looking at her as a potential candidate. Now two years later, her time has finally come. As a full-time official, Sarah will be overseeing a full schedule of games throughout the upcoming 2015 season.
Sarah has been breaking barriers since she first started officiating. In 2007, she became the first female to officiate a NCAA football game and in 2009, she became the first female to officiate a collegiate bowl game. Since then, she has gotten gigs officiating NFL preseason games and training camps, but this latest promotion is by far her biggest career move yet.
We want to extend our congratulations to this ballerific woman. Go ‘head girl!
