The first-ever tweet sent by Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey has sold for $2.9 million as a non-fungible token on the Valuables platform.
According to CNBC, the tweet was first listed for sale as an NFT on March 6. By March 9, the highest offer was from the CEO of Bridge Oracle, Sina Eastavi. The winning bid was recorded in the cryptocurrency ether and was placed for 1,630.58 ether.
The tweet was first posted on March 21, 2006, and says, “just setting up my twttr.” Dorsey’s original tweet can still be found on Twitter, and the winning bidder is buying the NFT, “signed and verified by the creator,” according to Valuables.
Dorsey said that he will convert all the money from the sale into bitcoin to be donated to Give Directly’s Africa Response fund.
What is an NFT? They are digital assets that can be bought and sold on the blockchain, the digital database underpinning cryptocurrencies like ether or bitcoin. Unlike cryptocurrencies, NFT’s are unique and cannot be replaced or exchanged with another of the same value.
