Nick Carter mourned the loss of his younger brother, Aaron, on Sunday.
Aaron died on Saturday at the age of 34. The 42-year-old Backstreet Boy posted several throwback photos to his Instagram on Sunday, accompanied by a lengthy caption paying tribute to his sibling.
“My heart is broken,” he began the caption. “Even though my brother and I have had a complicated relationship, my love for him has never ever faded. I have always held on to the hope that he would somehow, someday, want to walk a healthy path and eventually find the help that he so desperately needed.”
He continued, “Sometimes we want to blame someone or something for a loss, but the truth is that addiction and mental illness is the real villain here. I will miss my brother more than anyone will ever know.”
“I love you baby brother,” he concluded the post.
The two brothers have had a tense relationship over the years. In 2019, Nick and his sister Angel filed a restraining order against Aaron.
“In light of Aaron’s increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child, we were left with no choice but to take every measure possible to protect ourselves and our family,” Nick wrote at the time.
Aaron has struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues throughout his career. He rose to fame in the late 1990s as a pop star. Aaron opened for the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, starred in the family’s reality show House of Carters, and most recently pivoted into hip hop. He released his fifth and final studio album, LOVE, in 2018.
He spent time in and out of rehab over the years and voluntarily entered treatment as recently as September 2022. The former child star decided to enroll himself to regain custody of his baby son, Prince.
The singer was found dead at his Southern California home on Saturday morning. Deputies responded to Aaron’s home around 11 a.m. after receiving a call that a man was found unresponsive in the bathtub. The singer’s cause of death has not yet been released.
