People are not here for Nicki Minaj’s line about civil rights icon #RosaParks in her new song “Yikes.”
It’s been a while since we’ve seen Nicki online, and of course, she always comes back with a bang, and a banger, as she’s dropped a new song titled “Yikes.” And that’s exactly what many were saying when they heard some of Nicki’s bars, especially, her line about the beloved Rosa Parks.
“Woke up, the price of coke up/ I just hit em with the low cut then call my folks up/ All that talkin’ out your neck just might get your throat cut/ This a mac truck, not a black truck/ When we move tell ’em back up/ Click the clack up, Yikes, you a clown, you do it for like,” Nick rhymes in the 51-second clip she posted on her social media pages. Then the Queens rapper name drops Parks, who would be 107 today. “All you b—es Rosa Parks, uh oh, get your ass up,” Minaj spits.
The line didn’t sit too well with Twitter users who began calling out Nicki, saying the line was “disrespectful.” “Nicki Minaj need to leave Rosa Parks [alone],” one Twitter user wrote. “Nicki Minaj did NOT say Rosa Parks get your ass up. She didn’t. Nah. I cant believe this,” another wrote. “Rosa Parks would have been 107 years old if she was still living to see her birthday today. Y’all go remind Nicki Minaj that. Quick history lesson: She never got up; she stayed seated. The lyric makes no sense,” said journalist Ernest Owens.
However, some social media users say Nicki’s line was merely a double entendre. “The bar was a double entendre … Basically, she’s talking about how everyone want to act like they’re in for a movement, or for the culture, but they’re not doing anything about it. So it’s sorta of like an indirect meaning to what Rosa stood for. Although Rosa Parks was sitting down, she made an impact,” said Twitter account, The State of Hip Hop, which breaks down and analyzes hip hop, rap songs, and hip hop culture. The account added that it’s important to use the context of Nicki’s other verses in the song in order to understand the rapper’s purpose for the line. Minaj raps, “You a clown/you do it for likes,” which the account says is Minaj criticizing fake activism.
Nicki has yet to respond to comments about the song, but it looks like the rap star is finally putting retirement concerns to rest at least.
