In her latest interview, Nicki Minaj spilled tea on her pop culture contributions and even shared that she approached Kanye West about a Yeezy collaboration.
The “Anaconda” rapper made the revelation during her sit down with Joe Budden. During their chat, Minaj detailed how her best-selling Fendi partnership was birthed from her 2018 record, “Chun Li.” She explained that after spitting the bar “Fendi prints on” in the hook, the line became wildly popular on social media and caught the attention of the luxury brand, who then recruited Minaj for the Fendi Prints On collection. The line quickly sold out.
After seeing how her impact sparked a revival of Fendi’s popularity, the Grammy-nominated raptress called on Ye to recreate that magic with his Yeezy imprint. However, the “DONDA” mogul shot down Minaj’s idea, citing that his now ex-wife Kim Kardashian should be the only one working on a “female version of the Yeezys.”
“He was like, ‘Well if I did something with you… I think my wife probably wouldn’t love that idea because I should be giving that to my wife instead,” the 39-year-old recounted Ye saying.
Despite her surprise that he’d turn down such a potentially monumental partnership, Minaj says there are no hard feelings and understood where West was coming from at the time. Still, she would like to see more people of color dominating in fashion spaces.
“We have to be careful that when we put these things out there and when a door is open that we do figure out a way to have another Black face there in that space,” Onika explained.
Kanye West has not publicly responded to Minaj’s claims.
