Nike is honoring the legacy and cultural influence of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) with its Yardrunners 5.0 collection. Among the two custom Air Force 1 designs featured in this year’s release, Kahlana Barfield Brown’s “Ice Cream” edition stands out as a heartfelt celebration of history, heritage, and personal pride.
Barfield Brown’s design pays homage to the rich traditions of HBCUs while weaving in deeply personal elements. The vintage cream leather upper reflects the historical significance of HBCUs, which date back to 1837. A brick-colored sock liner nods to the strength and iconic architecture of these institutions, while the deep brown tongue, swoosh, and outsole honor melanin and the unity shared by HBCU students. Crimson red accents, inspired by her alma mater Howard University, her sorority, and her late grandmother, add a meaningful touch to the design. Completing the look, Barfield Brown’s signature graces the heel, making the sneaker a tribute not only to HBCUs but to her personal journey.
“These aren’t just sneakers—they’re a love letter to every Black student who’s ever walked The Yard,” Barfield Brown shared. “This design carries the soul of our HBCUs, the history that grounds us, and the excellence we carry into the world.”
The Yardrunners 5.0 collection also features a custom Air Force 1 by Virginia Union University (VUU) alum Dex Robinson. His design incorporates elements that reflect VUU’s Panther mascot, including a standout pony hair finish that symbolizes strength and elegance. Maroon laces and a steel-outlined Nike Swoosh represent the school’s colors, while heel tabs reading “Dear Union” and “With Love, Dex Rob” add a personal touch. The insole includes a heartfelt letter from Robinson, paired with a silhouette of the VUU campus sign. Interchangeable pins, such as the VUU logo and Panther mascot, allow for further customization.
Both Barfield Brown and Robinson’s designs celebrate the individuality of their experiences while embodying the shared pride and legacy of HBCUs. Nike’s Yardrunners 5.0 collection builds on the brand’s commitment to honoring HBCU culture through meaningful collaborations and purpose-driven design.
The sneakers will be available at select retailers starting December 18 and on the SNKRS app from December 20.
