Noah Cyrus apologizes for referring to Candace Owens as a “nappy ass hoe” in her defense of Harry Style’s wardrobe.
Cyrus, 20, claims she didn’t know “nappy” was an offensive term to use, especially when referring to a Black person. “I am mortified that I used a term without knowing the context and history, but I know now, and I am horrified and truly sorry,” the singer wrote on Instagram Thursday.
The “I’m sorry” spiel comes after Owens, 31, criticized Styles wardrobe choice in the December issue of Vogue. The 26-year-old sported a gown-like, gender-fluid outfit, and Owens responded to the cover calling for people to “bring back manly men.”
That’s when Cyrus took to her Instagram Story on Wednesday and wrote, “he wears this dress better than any of u nappy ass heauxz,” according to a screenshot obtained by TMZ. Of course, it didn’t take long for the internet to drag her over her offensive and blatantly racist comment.
And as typical, what comes next? An apology. “i am mortified that i used a term without knowing the context and history, but i know now and i am horrified and truly sorry. i will never use it again,” she wrote on her Instagram Story Thursday. She continued, “thank you for educating me. I in no way meant to offend anyone. i am so so sorry.”
Styles went on to share his own response to Owens, simply rewriting what Owens said about him alongside a picture of himself. The “Watermelon Sugar” singer told Variety that he is not going to limit his style of clothing to social standards and gender roles. “To not wear [something] because it’s females’ clothing, you shut out a whole world of great clothes,” he said. “And I think what’s exciting about right now is you can wear what you like. It doesn’t have to be X or Y. Those lines are becoming more and more blurred.”
