North Carolina Lawmaker Proposes Making Petey Pablo’s “Raise Up” the State’s Official Hip-Hop Anthem

North Carolina might be getting an official hip-hop anthem, and it’s none other than Petey Pablo’s Raise Up.

Senate Bill 512, filed by Durham Democrat Natalie Murdock, is pushing to give the 2001 hit some official state love.

Even if you’re not into hip-hop, you’ve heard the song Raise Up, especially at sporting events.

The song’s famous hook “take your shirt off and twist it ‘round your head like a helicopter,” has as much state pride as you can fit on a track.

If approved, Raise Up will stand alongside the dogwood flower and the cardinal as an official state symbol.

Now, it’s up to lawmakers to decide whether the iconic anthem gets its rightful place in North Carolina history or remains a fan-favorite.
