A nurse dying from coronavirus recorded a heartbreaking video to his family just hours before succumbing to the virus.
Sergio Humberto Padilla Hernandez, 28, tested positive on October 22 and hospitalized on November 5 with trouble breathing. He recorded the video for his family the following day while remaining hopeful that he would recoup.
“I will recover, God willing. We will move forward,” he said in Spanish in the video. “Whatever happens, you will always be looking out for my best interests, always. I love you, and you are in my heart.”
A few hours later, he was intubated and then passed away at the hospital where he worked in Cuauhtémoc, Mexico, CNN reports.
Hernandez’s family has been hit particularly hard by COVID-19. His sister, Delores Padilla Hernandez, passed away at the age of 30 in August. Both of his parents became sick with the virus, as did his cousin and Dolores’ twin sister and daughter.
His cousin told CNN that Hernandez spent time out of work from his job at Hospital Angeles Cuauhtémoc due to exposure. During his time off, he cared for his sick family members. He returned to work in September to help fight the virus, only to be diagnosed with the same virus a month later.
According to Johns Hopkins Univesity statistics, Mexico has more than 997,000 coronavirus cases. More than 97,000 people have died of the virus. The country currently ranks 11th in the world for global cases as of Saturday.
