Add Geno Smith and reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali to the list of players who have come to blows during this season’s NFL summer camp. Unfortunately for Smith though, his tussle with Enemkpali left him with a broken jaw that will cause him to sit out 6-10 weeks.
The incident took place Tuesday morning in the team’s locker room. “It was nothing to do with football. … It was very childish,” coach Todd Bowles said. “He got cold-cocked … sucker punched, whatever you want to call it, in the jaw. He’s got a broken jaw, a fractured jaw.” Due to his actions, the Jets immediately released IK Enemkpali on the spot. He was a sixth round draft pick in 2014.
“The team knows it. It’s something we don’t tolerate, something we can’t stand,” Bowles tells ESPN. “You don’t walk up to a man and punch him in the face. It was something very childish, something sixth-graders could’ve talked about. It had no reason to happen. If they want to tell you what happened, they can tell you what happened. I told them I wouldn’t say anything about it.“
While Geno takes the next month or two to recuperate, veteran backup Ryan Fitzpatrick will step in and start the season as quarterback.
I wonder what’s behind the sudden drama between Geno and IK.
