Newly released footage shows a thief who stole a man‘s car in East Harlem climbing into the vehicle with the owner‘s 11-year-old son inside before going on a terrifying 20-minute joyride.
Early Tuesday morning, police released surveillance video showing the suspect getting behind the Nissan Rogue before driving off shortly after a pedestrian crossed in front of the SUV.
The suspect had entered the vehicle at around 8 p.m. on Sunday while the boy was sitting in the front passenger seat of his father’s car, which was left running while he went into a City Fresh Market on Third Avenue near East 121st Street.
“I’m a friend of your dad’s,” the suspect allegedly told the boy. “Don’t worry.”
Twenty minutes later, the suspect stopped his SUV near Lafayette and Bolton avenues in Castle Hill, more than five miles away, and let the boy out unharmed.
Police said that the boy could call his dad, who notified the police. He was later reunited with his dad and taken to the hospital for minor neck pain.
According to police, the suspect was spotted that same night stealing a cell phone charger inside the BP gas station on Hillside Avenue near 242nd Street in Bellerose, Queens.
Around 1 a.m. Monday, authorities found the stolen SUV in the 108th Precinct in southwest Queens.
As of this morning, the suspect is still on the loose. He is described as 5-foot-7 and 150 pounds, with a full beard and short, dark hair. He was last seen wearing dark-colored pants, a multi-colored jacket, a dark-colored baseball cap, a dark-colored hoodie, and sneakers.
