A New York City woman was walking down the street Friday night in the Bronx when she was struck by a car and impaled on a metal fence. The woman later succumbed to her injuries.
According to NYPD, Paulina Nrecaj was walking down the street to get pizza at around 6:30 p.m. when she was hit by a gray Lexus SUV. The force of the collision sent the woman onto the fence, impaling her.Â
The car continued moving forward until it came to rest against an apartment building. The Lexus reportedly jumped the curb, trying to swerve around a van stopped in an intersection.Â
The 59-year-old victim and the driver of the vehicle were both taken to Jacobi Hospital. The woman was initially listed in critical condition, but her family told the New York Post that she died after undergoing surgery. The driver was listed in stable condition.Â
Police say the crash appeared accidental, and the driver is not facing any charges at this time. Â
Nrecaj’s friends and family gathered outside the building on Saturday night. Candles were lit, and flowers were left at a makeshift memorial for the stay-at-home mom. She is survived by her husband, three children, and one grandchild.Â
