A rookie police officer with the New York Police Department has expressed remorse over giving her superior officer a lap dance at the precinct Christmas party. She does not believe it would have been such a big deal if it were a man.
Vera Mekuli, 26, told TMZ that she hasn’t spoken to lieutenant Nick McGarry since and isn’t comfortable showing up for work at the station. She says that everyone has been understanding and that she’s been allowed to work from home.
Mekuli apologized to the lieutenant’s wife, saying that she hoped that it hadn’t caused any problems in their marriage. She revealed she was unaware that he was even married.
Mekuli told the outlet that while she acts professionally at work, she is the life of the party outside of work. She doesn’t believe that it would have blown up the way it had if she wasn’t a woman.
“I feel like just because, mainly — I’m a female, dressed the way I was, being a rookie ‚— things were different,” she said. “Had it been a man doing it, I feel like it would have been more of a joking matter, and it would have stayed in-house versus go public the way it did with me.”
All the attention has left her so embarrassed that she hasn’t left her house since the lap dance video surfaced.
Mekuli had only worked at the 44th Precinct for four months when the video went viral. Neither she nor the lieutenant faces disciplinary action, but he has been reassigned to subway patrol.
