Misty Copeland Biopic gets a director

The upcoming Misty Copeland biopic, “Life In Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina,” has found its director in Nzingha Stewart.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film is a movie adaptation based on Copeland’s bestselling memoir of the same name.

Misty shares her triumphant story of overcoming poor, humble beginnings to becoming the first African American woman to be promoted to the principal dancer in the American Ballet Theatre.

The movie will show how Copeland, who only began ballet at the late age of 13, found herself in the center of a custody battle between her mother and her ballet teachers who were acting as her legal guardians at the time.

Nzingha Stewart is an accomplished director, known most notably for her work on episodes of “Scandal” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” She was also an executive producer on Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls.” Stewart is currently working on her feature film directorial debut “Tall Girl,” which is described as a coming of age story, set to premiere on Netflix.

“As an African-American woman I know firsthand that when Misty Copeland leaps, we all soar,” said Steward in a statement. “As a filmmaker, I am thrilled to bring this hopeful, triumphant and cinematic story to the big screen.”
