During a recent episode of Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Forever President Barack Obama talked about his daughter Sasha Obama’s close friendship with President Joe Biden’s granddaughter Maisy Biden.
In the past, Obama, 59, and his friend and now President, Joe Biden, 78, have discussed the two 20-year-olds relationships. The girls grew up together while their families spent time in the White House.
Maisy is still one of Sasha’s childhood best friends, PEOPLE reported. Obama laughed as he recalled memories of coaching the two’s fourth-grade recreational league basketball team.
“Maisy was like the LeBron of the league,” Obama told Shepard, 46, and Monica Padman. “She dominated. She was great, you know, and we went undefeated. The Vipers ruled.”
The team went by the name the “Vipers” and had made it to the championship, but Obama’s coaching tenure didn’t end well. In his memoir “A Promised Land,” he discussed being forced to quit the team after parents of players on opposing teams complained he gave his daughter’s team an advantage.
“They must think being coached by you is something they can put on their Harvard application,” Obama recalled his personal aide and assistant coach Reggie Love joking about the controversy.
Shepard brought the topic up after he asked Obama about a video that went viral during the 2020 campaign, which showed Obama sinking a three-point shot in front of Joe Biden.
“The best part of that shot was, if you go back and look at the video there’s a young woman in a mask who’s under the basket, and she’s the one who gave me the pass: That is Joe Biden’s granddaughter Maisy Biden, who was one of Sasha’s best friends and still is growing up,” Obama said. “They went to the same school.”
Joe didn’t mind the shot or the fact that Obama walked off the court saying, “That’s what I do! That’s what I do!”
“Part of the reason Joe didn’t mind was because his granddaughter, she got the assist,” Obama joked. “She dropped the dime, man. It was right there. All I had to do was just finish.”
