Barack Obama is firing back after Donald Trump accused him of treason over alleged efforts to sway the 2016 election. In a rare public statement, Obama’s office slammed Trump’s claims as “bizarre,” “ridiculous,” and nothing more than a distraction.
“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” the statement read. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction.”
Obama’s team reminded Trump that nothing in the documents fueling his accusations undermines the longstanding conclusion that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 election but did not alter any votes. That conclusion wasn’t just a Democratic talking point. It was reaffirmed in 2020 by a bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation led by Republican Senator Marco Rubio.
Rubio’s committee reviewed the intelligence findings and confirmed Russia’s election meddling but found no evidence that ballots were changed. Obama’s response essentially told Trump to direct his anger at his fellow Republican rather than fabricate new attacks.
Obama’s office rarely responds to Trump’s frequent accusations, but this one struck a nerve as it coincides with heightened political tensions and other ongoing controversies, including Trump’s continued attempts to shift public attention from his own scandals.
For now, Obama’s message is clear: the facts haven’t changed and even your Sec of State Marco Rubio agrees.
