President Obama took to Twitter on Monday to announce the gun control package he plans to introduce on Tuesday.
“Guns now kill as many people as cars in almost half of the U.S. We can’t stop every act of violence, but we can save lives if we act,” the POUTUS tweeted. “Tomorrow, I’m taking action to reduce gun violence and save lives – protecting the Second Amendment and our kids.”
President Obama says that with his new plan, we will keep guns out of the wrong hands, enforce our guns laws, and ensure those with serious mental illnesses get treatment.
“Each year, more than 30,000 American lives are cut short by guns – two-thirds coming from suicides. Too many Americans have lost loved ones,” the President tweeted. Because of this, he also plans to propose a $500 million investment to increase access to mental health care.
Though President Obama hopes that these new precautions will lessen unnecessary deaths, he still remains realistic.  “We have to be very clear that this is not going to solve every violent crime in this country,” President Obama said. “It’s not going to prevent every mass shooting; it’s not going to keep every gun out of the hands of a criminal.”
Obama is taking on a huge tasks, by attempting to make changes to the already existing gun laws. Â He is looking to take the necessary actions to make changes to the gun trade, that he was unsuccessful in doing so with Congress three years ago. That legislation would have closed loopholes that allow millions of guns to be sold without background checks at gun shows or in online firearm exchanges.
President Obama expressed his frustrations towards his limitations on his authority, but is determined to demonstrate that he is doing something on the gun issue.
He is seeking to hire more personnel to process background checks in a timely manner, direct officials to conduct more gun research, improve the information in the background check system, encourage more domestic violence prosecutions and order better tracking of lost guns. He will also make it easier for states to provide mental health information to the background check system, which could bar a gun sale.
What are thoughts on this, and how it will impact the nation?
