A police officer is speaking out about being brutally tortured and beaten by violent Trump supporters during the Capitol riot in January.
In newly obtained bodycam footage by CBS News, D.C. Metropolitan Police officer Michael Fanone is seen being pulled into the crowd and battered by rioters. Fanone says that “all holy hell broke loose,” and before long, he was tasered numerous times at the base of his skull despite posing no threat.
The officer says he was forced to the ground and ultimately suffered a mild heart attack and a brain injury. Desperately seeking mercy from his attackers, Fanone called out, “I have kids.”
The officer says he is now feuding with the same Congress members he worked to protect, feeling abandoned by them after the January 6th insurrection. Fanone also says his fellow officers also share the sentiment.
Last week, twenty-one House Republicans ruled against a law that would have acknowledged Fanone and other cops for their bravery during the incident with the highest congressional honor. He believes it was an attempt to avoid confirming the attack.
Fanone, along with Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger and Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell, agrees that there needs to be a 9/11-style commission dedicated to examining the Capitol riot. However, that proposal was also shot down by Senate Republicans.
Kinzinger believes that if Congress members truly believe that the riot was sparked by the FBI, Antifa, or Black Lives Matter members, then they should want a commission to look into it.
Fanone says that he is “done tiptoeing through the tulips” and wants to know what political leaders will do to prevent this from happening again.
