As the president of the #UnitedStates, it is almost expected to be blamed for some of the issues that occur across the country. Simple things, such as, unemployment rates or the nation’s economy are easy issues to blame the president for. Nevertheless, learned behavior that has been passed on for generations to generations, that’s been instilled in the mindset of many Americans, is nearly impossible to blame on an individual.
However, according to #TheGuardian, #DonaldTrump’s county chairwoman for his campaign in #Ohio has found a way to blame #PresidentObama for racism, claiming there was “no racism” prior to his presidency. In addition, chairwoman #KathyMiller said that black people who have not progressed in this nation, only have themselves to blame. Assuming Miller is referring to those that have avoided fatal encounters with the police, she claimed African American’s have had every opportunity given to them, failed to take advantage of it.
“If you’re black and you haven’t been successful in the last 50 years, it’s your own fault. You’ve had every opportunity, it was given to you,” #KathyMiller said during a taped interview with the publication.
“You’ve had the same schools everybody else went to. You had benefits to go to college that white kids didn’t have. You had all the advantages and didn’t take advantage of it. It’s not our fault, certainly.”
According to the Guardian, Miller continued with her disrespectful condescending remarks concerning #BlackLivesMatter, describing the movement as “a stupid waste of time, African American households and racism in the ‘60s.
Although, 16% of the Mahoning county population is African American, Miller suggested they haven’t impacted any election, although, voter turnout in Ohio was higher among black people than white, the Guardian reports.
The chairwoman based her incorrect information about the black vote on her opinion of how African Americans were brought up, saying “I don’t think that’s part of the way they’re raised.”
“For us, I mean that was something we all did in our families, we all voted.
Unfortunately, the ignorance didn’t end there. She claimed racism was not a thing back when she was in high school, saying “growing up as a kid, there was no racism, believe me. We were just all kids going to school.” Which is easy for someone to say, when the racism was not directed towards them. When asked about segregation and the civil rights movement, she responded, “I never experienced it. I never saw that as anything,” the publication reports.
“I don’t think there was any racism until Obama got elected. We never had problems like this…Now, with the people with guns, and shooting up neighborhoods, and not being responsible citizens, that’s a big change, and I think that’s the philosophy that Obama has perpetuated on America,” she continued.
The publication then informed Miller that some might find her disrespectful offensive comments, as just that, however, she replied, “I don’t care, it’s the truth.”
It’s obvious that some people turn a blind eye to the racism that goes on around them. When people are not affected by something directly, they feel as if it didn’t even happen. It’s a shame people like this exist, so ignorant and misinformed. Do yourself a favor and open your eyes. Take a look around. Way before President Obama even born, Africans were brought to this country to work as slaves. After that, laws were enforced to separate African Americans from white Americans, because they were thought of as superior. To this day, African American men, women and even children are being gunned down in the streets by white police officers without consequence. All things considered, it is ridiculous to assume President Obama is the cause of the racism in America. This nation is deeply rooted in racism.
