On the latest episode of the Baller Alert Show hosted by Ferrari Simmons and BT, Nigerian Afrobeats star Omah Lay stopped by for a candid chat. From his search for a girlfriend in the U.S. to his incredible rise in the global music scene, Omah Lay kept it real and entertaining throughout the interview.
As the interview kicked off, Omah Lay joked that he came to the U.S. not just for his music but to find a girlfriend. He said, “I’ve been searching in Nigeria, it’s not working, so I came here.” The hosts quickly jumped in to ask if he was serious, with Omah Lay explaining that while he’s open to love, he’s not about the multiple wives lifestyle some might associate with his Nigerian background. “Marrying multiple wives doesn’t make sense to me,” he said.
When asked about what type of woman he’s looking for, Omah Lay kept it simple. “I like pretty women,” he said with a laugh. Though he’s flexible on things like whether she has a job or is still in school, he made it clear that he’s serious about finding someone special.
The conversation shifted to Omah Lay’s career, with Ferrari Simmons highlighting the artist’s impressive streaming numbers—2.8 billion global streams, 12 million monthly listeners on Spotify, and more. Omah Lay, humbled by his success, called it a blessing but emphasized that it comes with responsibility. “As you grow, your fans grow, and you have to be there to show them what’s right,” he said.
BT then pointed out how Afrobeats has gained a strong foothold in the U.S. over the past few years, following the popularity of genres like dancehall and Caribbean music. Omah Lay agreed, adding that it takes time for U.S. audiences to discover new genres and artists. He mentioned that many big Nigerian artists are now making waves internationally but noted, “The U.S. always comes last before they discover.”
Omah Lay got real about the competitive nature of the Nigerian music scene. While there’s love between artists, he admitted that competition fuels creativity. “It’s what keeps the industry alive,” he said, adding that while Nigerian artists don’t collaborate as much as those in South Africa, it’s all part of maintaining a unique artistic identity.
Toward the end of the interview, Omah Lay dropped a bombshell—he has a collaboration with Nigerian superstar Davido on the way. Though he tried to keep the details under wraps, he did reveal his excitement about the project. “It’s something I didn’t imagine would be this great,” Omah Lay said, calling Davido “an amazing person.”
As for new music, Omah Lay shared that his latest single “I’m Moving” is out now, and his upcoming album Clarity of Mind is on the way. While there’s no release date yet, Omah Lay is taking his time to perfect it. “I’ll tell the label when I’m ready,” he said with a grin.
With his infectious energy and massive success, it’s clear that Omah Lay is here to stay—whether he finds that perfect girlfriend or not.
