Just two days ahead of the release of Omarosa Manigault Newman’s explosive tell-all book, “Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House,” the former aide to the Celebrity-in-Chief appeared on “Meet the Press” to spill even more of the administration’s secrets.
In Sunday’s episode of the NBC show, host Chuck Todd aired a secret recording of Omarosa’s December firing from the White House. In the recording, which is said to have been taken in the Situation Room — a room typically off limits to recording devices — White House Chief of Staff, John Kelly can be heard telling Omarosa to keep it cool, as he explained her firing over “integrity violations.”
“I think it’s important to understand that if we make this a friendly departure, we can all be, you know, you can look at your time here at the White House as a year of service to the nation, and then you can go on without any difficulty in the future relative to your reputation,” Kelly said in the recording, which Omarosa perceived as a threat.
“It is very obvious a threat. He goes on to say that things can get ugly for you,” Omarosa said to Todd. “The chief of staff of the United States, under the direction of the president of the United States, threatening me on damage to my reputation. And things getting ugly for me, and damage to my reputation, that is downright criminal. And if I didn’t have these recordings, no one in America would believe me. So I protected myself and now I am glad I didn’t.”
Omarosa explained that she made the recordings to protect herself, especially in a “White House where everybody lies.”
As the interview continued, Omarosa also opened up about her “blind spot,” in regards to Trump, as she revealed that she had been “totally complicit,” in certain situations, including the Charlottesville controversy. She also clarified her claim about the “N-word,” saying, Trump “never said the N-word in my presence,” but “I heard his voice as clear as you and I are sitting here,” she said of a recording of Trump using the slur.
In turn, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a statement, condemning Omarosa for violating the rules of the Situation Room.
“The very idea of a staff member would sneak a recording device into the White House Situation Room, shows a blatant disregard for our national security – and then to brag about it on national television further proves the lack of character and integrity of this disgruntled former White House employee,” she said.
