OnlyFans is cleaning up its platform by scrapping all porn beginning in October.
While OnlyFans was not founded specifically for pornography content, it has long been considered a safe space for sex creators to legally make a living through paid subscriptions. However, the site has struggled to secure investors due to this fact. Now that the platform is trying to raise $1 billion from outside investors, they are attempting to rebrand in the eyes of potential partners, gearing more towards musicians, fitness gurus, and chefs.
Per their updated terms and conditions, OF will prohibit any material that displays, promotes, or advertises sexual intercourse, masturbation, genital-to-genital images, and all other posts showing “sexually explicit conduct.” Adult creators have until December 1st to clean up their profiles or risk being deleted.
Social media exploded when news of these updated terms hit the internet, with sex workers calling out the company for capitalizing off of their content and seemingly disposing of them to gain more capital.
The Adult Industry Laborers and Artists Association co-chair, Mary Moody, says that the ban would put sex workers “on the street who could otherwise afford rent” and “starve the children of sex workers who could otherwise afford to feed them.”
Several celebrities have joined the platform, including Bella Thorne and Cardi B. However, this has not helped the company secure its financial goals.
“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our platform and continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans stated.
Since the news broke, rapper Tyga has stated that he was removing his content from Only Fans and launching his own subscription-based competitor to allow sex workers to continue making a living.
