Oprah has spoken out and taken a neutral stance regarding her friend Dr. Mehmet Oz running for Senate as a Republican.
The two have had a lengthy friendship, with Oprah praising Dr. Oz over the years and inviting him multiple times on the Oprah Winfrey Show as a medical expert during segments surrounding health and wellness.
In November, Oz announced that he was ending his popular medical talk show in January to pursue the 2022 Pennsylvania Senate race after Republican Sen. Pat Toomey announced he would not be seeking reelection.
In her statement to New York magazine, Winfrey called the fact that mostly all citizens can run for public office positions “one of the great things about our democracy.”
“Mehmet Oz has made that decision. And now it’s up to the residents of Pennsylvania to decide who will represent them,” Winfrey added. Her highly awaited comments arrive after Oz reportedly told several Republicans that Winfrey would help him secure the Senate seat. However, a former producer for The Dr. Oz Show said, “there is no way” that the award-winning talk show host and actress will involve herself in the election business.
Oz has previously stated that the motivation behind his Senate run was him witnessing the government “mix politics and medicine,” which did not result in solutions.
