Orlando could soon look like Blade Runner with cars flying in the skies.
Orlando International Airport is gearing up to build a vertiport, a launch and landing pad for electric air taxis.
The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will start taking bids next month.
These small aircraft, powered by electricity, will carry up to six passengers and take off and land vertically. The first vertiport will be built on the airport’s East Airfield.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer confirmed the city is working with the FAA to make this happen. This is the airport’s third attempt at a vertiport.
In 2020, Lilium, a German flying car company, signed a deal with Lake Nona developers to launch air taxis by 2025. Then in 2021, Orlando teamed up with NASA to study air mobility—but that plan never took off.
Now, the city is going all in. By 2028, Orlando’s skyline could be buzzing with flying cars.
