The 91st Annual Academy Awards is gearing up for its 2019 debut.
The first step to getting the public ready for the big ceremony is, obviously, announcing the nominees. So, first things first. Shoutout to “Black Panther” for earning a total of seven nominations. One of which helped the film create history, in becoming the first superhero movie ever to be nominated for Best Picture.
Spike Lee also has a lot to be proud of. Though some may have their own reservations about the Brooklyn-bred director, there’s no taking away the art he created through “BlacKkKlansman.” This is only his third Oscar nomination since 1998’s “4 Little Girls.” Now, the movie veteran can celebrate the latest accomplishment of his first nomination for Best Director.
Regina King’s 2019 started on a roll after her Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” That huge accolade couldn’t even be digested before news broke about the same motherly figure character being nominated for an Oscar. What’s even more surprising is even though Regina has been an active player in Hollywood for a little over three decades, this is her first Academy Award nomination!
As for the remaining nominations, “The Favorite” and Netflix’s “Roma,” which landed the streaming service its first Best Picture Oscar nomination, lead all films with 10 nominations a piece, as both are nominated for Best Picture, joining “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Green Book,” “A Star Is Born,” and “Vice.” Meanwhile, the latter two earned eight noms a piece, while “Black Panther” followed close behind with seven, “BlacKkKLansmen” with six, and “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book” each landed five.
So who are you guys rooting for? Be sure to see who takes home the gold on February 24.
