#OscarsMostlyWhite: Beyoncé, Alfre Woodard and More Snubbed, “Joker” Leads With 11 Nominations

The Oscar nominations have been released, and much to fans’ dismay, the nominations still lacked diversity in some of the biggest categories.

Beyoncé did not snag a Best Original Song nomination for “Spirit” from the Lion King remake. While Jennifer Lopez, who was projected to be nominated in this year’s Academy Awards, was snubbed for her role in “Hustlers.” Other disappointing snubs include Lena Waithe’s “Queen & Slim,” and Awkwafina for her role in “The Farewell.” Eddie Murphy, who had a comeback in 2019 with Netflix’s “Dolemite Is My Name” was also snubbed in the Best Actor category.

Despite the snubs, two of the year’s biggest films will go head to head for Best Picture.

The controversial drama about the Batman’s infamous rival depicted from a mental illness standpoint, “Joker” leads with 11 nominations, including Best Picture. The film will go against Netflix’s “The Irishman,” which follows the relationship between mobsters and union activist, Jimmy Hoffa, ultimately leading up to his unsolved disappearance in 1975. They earned 10 nominations.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” ”1917,” “Parasite,” “Marriage Story,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Little Women,” and “Ford v Ferrari” will also compete for the Academy Awards’ top honor.

Nominees for Best Director included Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Bong Joon-ho, Sam Mendes, and Todd Phillips. According to the Washington Post, there were notably no women nominated in the best director category for the second year in a row. Greta Gerwig, who garnered critical acclaim for “Little Women,” was noticeably snubbed from the category.

Cynthia Erivo is the only woman of color nominated at the 2020 Academy Awards. She is nominated for Best Actress for her portrayal of abolitionist Harriet Tubman in the biopic, “Harriet.” Erivo is also nominated for the Best Original Song category for her performance of “Stand Up” from the film’s soundtrack, for Best Actress and Best Song, according to The Hill.

The 92nd Academy Awards will air on Sunday, February 9, 2020, in Los Angeles, California.
