The parents of late football star Dwayne Haskins were not in attendance of his funeral because they didn’t know his wife.
The family previously announced that they would lay the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback to rest in three different ceremonies. The first one held by his wife Kalabrya Haskins, took place Friday at the Allegheny Center Alliance Church in Pittsburgh. His parents, Dwayne Sr. and Tamara Haskins, did not attend that service because they claim since they’ve never met his wife, they didn’t want a funeral to be their first time doing so. Instead, they planned two separate services: one in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the final one Sunday in Potomac, Maryland. These sites represent the locations where Dwayne was born and raised.
The funeral situation is just the latest eyebrow-raising occurrence surrounding the young man’s death. Dwayne was hit and killed on April 9th while attempting to cross the westbound lanes of Interstate 595 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after his car stalled. He was struck by two vehicles as he tried getting across the road. Both drivers stopped immediately. Kalabrya placed a call to 911, revealing that her husband told her he was trying to cross the busy lanes to seek gas. After he failed to call her back, she became panicked.
The 24-year-old was in Florida training with the Steelers. In his short professional career, he was drafted in the first round by Washington in 2019 after a standout college career at Ohio State.
