The parents of a Louisiana fourth-grader suspended over having a BB gun in his bedroom during an online learning class have filed suit against the Jefferson Parish school district, according to their family attorney.
CNN is reporting that the lawsuit filed on Friday seeks damages of at least $50,000 for “mental pain, suffering, anguish and embarrassment, humiliation and loss of self-esteem, future counseling, tutoring, and lost income” on behalf of Ka’Mauri Harrison.
The school suspended the 9-year-old after a teacher saw a BB gun on-screen during his virtual class last month.
The school board found the boy guilty during a hearing last month of “displaying a facsimile weapon while receiving virtual instruction from Woodmere Elementary School,” according to the lawsuit.
According to the lawsuit, during the district hearing, Ka’Mauri’s father, Nyron Harrison, said, “it is very important to the family that this be dismissed, that it does not follow him in his educational career … the school did not follow his due process rights.”
Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry announced last month that his office was launching an investigation into the incident. He accused the school of overstepping its boundaries in punishing the boy.
