Pastor Jamal Bryant has issued a public apology via Instagram to Kevin Samuels’s family.
The apology comes after Bryant received backlash for criticizing Samuels for having a GoFundMe account set up to pay for his funeral.
During his sermon, Bryant blasted Samuels for his dismissive attitude toward Black women. He then suggested reasoning for why such a “high valued man” needed a GoFundMe account.
Sunday, Pastor Bryant apologized at the pulpit. The apology clip was also posted to his Instagram account.
“Take a moment last week while we were in worship, I referred to the deceased public critic and public intellectual about relationships, Brother Samuels. As a consequence, later information I came forth that what it is that I said was incorrect,” he said.
“This place is a place of truth. Everything that I say from this place must be a place of truth as it represents the Gospel of God. I don’t care whether you are a pastor, a Bishop, or a postman. When you are wrong, you have to own when you are wrong and so not in a quiet place, but from the same pulpit in which I said it, I wanted to address it. Everybody wants to be an adult until it’s time to apologize. I am a fan.”
Pastor Jamal also shared a clip of the sermon and captioned it; “Benjamin Franklin once said, “the best way to mess up an apology is to add an excuse.” I extend my deepest condolences and apologies to #kevinsamuels family and friends.”
He continued, “Thank you to all who purposed to keep me accountable. We grow from mistakes and birth maturity. Humility will always defeat arrogance . We grow as we go!”
