The pastor at a famous Tulsa, Oklahoma church apologized on Monday for rubbing spit into a man’s face during a sermon on Sunday.
The video of Pastor Mike Todd went viral on social media after it was posted on Transformation Church’s Youtube channel.
Todd took to very extreme measures while demonstrating how “receiving vision from God might get nasty.”
“And this is where most people would not face Jesus anymore,” Todd said before the moment. “What most people would do would [be to] turn away.”
Footage from Sunday’s show shows the pastor coughing and spitting into his hand, then wiping the spit onto the face of a man next to him on stage.
The moment led to all types of disgust on social media.
It “was disgusting” and “extreme,” Todd said on social media regarding the stunt.
“I watched it back, and it was disgusting,” he said in a video, noting that the man was his brother. “Like, that was gross. I want to validate everybody’s feelings. That was a distraction to what I was really trying to do. …I own that.”
He added, “we want people to see Jesus. We want people to feel loved. We want people who are desperate to be able to find hope and I am passionate — so much so that I try to do extreme things to help people get it. And yesterday it crossed the line.”
Todd’s name was trending on Twitter on Monday as he faced backlash for performing what people are calling “a social media stunt,” particularly as COVID-19 cases surge in Oklahoma and around the country.
In March, Todd worked with the governor to lead a statewide day of prayer to protect Oklahoma against the coronavirus pandemic.
Had never heard of “Pastor” Mike Todd before today. But I truly understand now why the elders used to frequently tell us that we’re in the last days.
