In a plot straight out of a Tyler Perry drama, an Alabama pastor is facing serious charges after what police say was a violent sidewalk encounter, followed by remorse.
Roy Powell, 72, pastor of Cedar Street Missionary Baptist Church, allegedly assaulted a man last week near a post office on Mobile Street in the city of Mobile. The victim told local outlet, KMVT, that Powell bumped into him and snapped, “You was in my way, I’m walking down the sidewalk.” He then left after a brief exchange.
But minutes later, Powell allegedly returned in a truck, struck the man in the head with a gun, and took his book bag. Even more bizarre, court records show the pastor came back a third time to apologize for his actions. The spiritual leader was arrested and hit with a first-degree robbery charge. He was released the next day on a $40,000 bond.
It’s unclear what type of injuries the man sustained, if any. However, the victim, who chose to stay anonymous, was stunned to learn the attacker was a pastor.
“So, when I heard that, I was like ‘wow,’” he said. “I don’t know what to say. Just wow.”
Powell has not yet commented publicly on his seemingly random assault.
