As Super Bowl LIX approaches, Patrick Mahomes is staying locked in on the game, but he took a moment to acknowledge Trump’s recent praise of his performance on the field.
During a pre-game press conference on Feb. 5, Mahomes, 29, was asked about Trump’s comments earlier this week, where Trump refused to make a Super Bowl prediction but praised a certain quarterback.
“I don’t want to say, but there’s a certain quarterback that seems to be a pretty good winner,” Trump, 78, said from the Oval Office, referring to Mahomes without naming him.
Mahomes, unaware of the clip, still appreciated the recognition.
“Obviously, it’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play,” Mahomes said.
When asked about Trump attending Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9 in New Orleans, Mahomes gave a vague response.
“It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president, someone that is at the top position in our country,” he said.
His teammate, Travis Kelce, echoed the sentiment, saying, “That’s awesome. It’s a great honor. No matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life, and having the president there—it’s the best country in the world—and that’s pretty cool.”
Mahomes has largely avoided political discussions, previously stating that he prefers to encourage voter participation rather than endorse candidates. However, his wife Brittany Mahomes made headlines last year after reportedly liking one of Trump’s Instagram posts, which led to mixed reactions online.
Trump is set to attend the Super Bowl this Sunday.
