Patriots’ Jabrill Peppers Arrested on Assault and Drug Charges

New England Patriots defensive captain, safety Jabrill Peppers, went from questionable to out just before their game against the Miami Dolphins. It was revealed Monday morning that Peppers had been arrested on Saturday night. Police reported responding to a disturbance at a residence in Braintree, Massachusetts, early Saturday.

Court documents show a woman told police that around 4 a.m., Peppers hit and choked her multiple times before pushing her down the stairs.

Peppers now faces charges of assault and battery on an intimate partner, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a Class B drug that police believe was cocaine. He pleaded not guilty in court on Monday.

Peppers’ attorney, speaking to WCVB, stated there is evidence that casts doubt on the allegations.

The Patriots and head coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged awareness of the situation, stating it would be handled internally while the police investigation unfolds. The team released an official statement on Monday through a spokesperson.

“We are aware of the incident involving Jabrill Peppers over the weekend, which is currently being investigated by the police. We have no further comments at this time,” a Patriots spokesperson told MassLive.

Peppers, who had two strong seasons with the team, signed a three-year, $24 million extension in the offseason. Head Coach Jerod Mayo expressed support for the 29-year-old, providing an update on WEEI Monday morning.

“He called that morning. I knew what was going on,” Mayo said. “We’ve informed the NFL, and we’re still gathering information… No one really knows the facts yet. It’s a process, and we don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building.”

Clarity on the situation is expected soon. Even though the Patriots’ playoff hopes may be slim, Peppers remains a key figure for the defense to play at its best.
