Robert Kraft may have been called on as a witness for the prosecution in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial, but he didn’t do much in his testimony to convince the jury that the former Patriots tight end is guilty. In fact, his testimony probably helped the defense if anything. Early this morning, the Patriots owner showed up to Fall River District Court as the latest witness to be called to the stand in the ongoing trial of Aaron Hernandez. Seeming a little out of it the entire time, Kraft gave indirect answers when asked what he did for a living and how long Hernandez played for his team. Later in his testimony, Kraft was asked about a conversation that he had with Hernandez on June 19, 2013, two days after Odin Lloyd was murdered. With Hernandez being investigated at the time, Kraft asked him if he was involved. Kraft testified that Hernandez maintained his innocence during that conversation, claiming that he was at the club at the time the murder occurred. When it was the defense’s turn to cross-examine Kraft, they asked questions about Kraft’s relationship with Hernandez. Kraft testified that Hernandez was a good player, that he was always respectful, and that he had never had any problems with him in the past.
While Kraft did not say anything to directly incriminate Hernandez, one thing that the prosecution will be able to use from Kraft’s testimony is the fact that Hernandez told Kraft he was at the club when the murder took place. It has already been proven during the trial that Hernandez was not at the club at the time of the murder, since no clubs were open that late. The prosecution can use this to show that Hernandez lied to someone he had a close relationship with, thus putting his character as well as his alibi into question.
The trial is expected to wrap up as soon as next week, meaning we will find out pretty soon whether Aaron Hernandez will spend the rest of his life in prison or if he will be walking out of that courthouse a free man. As of now, there really is no telling which side has the advantage. With only a few witnesses left to testify, it’ll be interesting to see if any of them will be the make it or break it factor in this case and determine the fate of Aaron Hernandez.
