Houston Texans star Running Back Arian Foster stated in a documentary called, “Schooled: Price of College Sports,” that he took money while playing college football during his senior year at the University of Tennessee. According to CBS Sports, Foster said, “I don’t know if this will throw us into an NCAA investigation — my senior year, I was getting money on the side. I really didn’t have any money. I had to either pay the rent or buy some food. I remember the feeling of like, ‘Man, be careful.’ But there’s nothing wrong with it. And you’re not going to convince me that there is something wrong with it.”
The debate continues on about whether college athletes should be paid or not but his revelation is not shocking. What is shocking is that more professional athletes are not admitting what they did while in college and how they can help create a solution to the problem. Later in the interview, Foster had more to say and I think it is important for every fan to understand how serious this problem is for collegiate athletes of all sports.
Foster stated that he didn’t have enough food and after playing in big games he did not understand why he could not afford too. He said that he would play in the game, take pictures and sign autographs and reality would set in once he got back to the dorm room. Foster stated that he did not have anything in his fridge nor did he have any money. This is a harsh reality that most collegiate athletes have to deal with but how will the NCAA help solve this problem? I will definitely check this documentary out.
