According to the reports, Wendt was taken to the hospital after the car rolled multiple times and landed on its side, while Smith sustained serious injuries and died of asphyxiation.
Just a mile from the scene, Zook committed suicide. He was found dead by authorities approximately an hour and a half later.
It was found that excessive speed contributed to the car accident. According to the investigation, police withheld information regarding Zook’s self-inflicted death and the identity of the car’s driver.
“Tyler enjoyed spending time with his teammates both on and off the field. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time with family, and being at the beach,” his obituary read. “Tyler was preceded in death by his best friend, Tyreese Smith, of Lancaster.”
At Conestoga Valley Senior High School in Lancaster, where Zook had just completed his junior year and Smith was an outgoing sophomore, Zook and Smith had played football together for ten years and were preparing for the fall season.
Classmates rushed to an informal memorial close to their high school, which included a cross of wood boards painted in the school’s red and blue colors, flowers, balloons, and photos.
