Pet Food Company Linked to More Than 130 Dog Deaths

A pet food company has been linked to the deaths of more than 130 dogs.

On Tuesday, the food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Midwestern Pet Foods had been linked to more than 130 dog deaths. In addition, the company has allegedly made several violations and recalls.

The FDA sent Midwestern Pet Foods a “warning letter on Aug. 9, letting the company know that they could be the reason why several dogs have died or become ill. More the 220 dogs have allegedly gotten sick from the product as well.

The FDA is dedicated to taking all steps possible to help pet owners have confidence that the food they buy for their animal companions is safe and wholesome,” Steven Solomon, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, said in a Tuesday statement, The New York Post reports. “We are issuing this corporate-wide warning letter because inspections of Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc.’s manufacturing plants revealed evidence of violations, which were shared across multiple plants and were associated with the illness or death of hundreds of pets who had eaten the company’s dry dog food.”

Sportmix cat and dog food products, which Midwestern Pet Foods manufacture, contained high levels of aflatoxin, a toxin produced by mold Aspergillus flavus.
