Looks like the 2022 Oscars will be having a host and reports are alleging Pete Davidson may be taking the position.
According to Page Six, a source says the Academy is looking to “reset” their typical dull show. Since Davidson has been ruling the headlines, they believe he could attract a younger audience. The source also mentioned how Pete brought in 6.3 million viewers during his New Year’s Eve special with Miley Cyrus.
“He gets a demographic that is hard to get. He is in a good space, his career is doing well and he is on the rise. He is a sex symbol, unlikely, but he is big with a certain generation,” says the source.
The prestigious award show hasn’t had a host since Jimmy Kimmel in 2018 and has suffered tremendously. Last year’s show brought in approximately 9.8 million viewers. This is 58% lower than the 2020 show which had roughly 23.6 million viewers.
Even though the president of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, Craig Erwich says the 2022 show will have a host, Pete’s spot has not been solidified just yet.
Actor Tom Holland has previously shown interest in the hosting position and claims he’s been in contact with the Academy.
However, according to Deadline, the awards show will probably have multiple hosts for the evening. An insider says Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Rock are allegedly being considered for the gig.
The 2022 awards show is set to air on ABC on March 27th.
