Pharrell Williams parted with over a million dollars’ worth of jewelry, watches, sneakers, and other treasures collected over the years as part of JOOPITER’s debut in 2022. Many of these pieces, including chains and pendants with N.E.R.D. and BBC logos, later appeared in Drake’s “Jumbotron S**t Poppin” music video in January 2023.
In a recent interview, Pharrell addressed questions about Drake’s purchase and the rapper’s reference to melting down the jewelry in Travis Scott’s “MELTDOWN.” When asked about Drake’s lines—seen by many as a dig related to tensions with Pharrell’s collaborator Pusha T—Pharrell seemed unfazed. “I think beyond all of the on-goings,” he said. “At the heart of it, he’s a fan of music. He’s a fan of the history of what it is, and I happen to be a part of that, and those artifacts are a part of it.”
Drake’s verse on the UTOPIA track included lines like, “Man, f*** all that spinnin’ the narrative s*** / I melt down the chains that I bought from yo’ boss / Give a f*** about all of that heritage s***.”
When asked directly how Drake’s lyrics struck him, Pharrell’s response was nonchalant. “It didn’t,” he said. When the interviewer pressed further, he simply replied, “No.” His calm reaction reinforced his unbothered attitude toward the situation.
Despite the tension implied by the lyrics, Pharrell remains focused on moving forward, seemingly unfazed by any lingering drama.
