What started out as a little bit of harmless fun between two NFC East rival teams took a tragic and unexpected turn on Sunday. Fans of both the Cowboys and Eagles had started GoFundMe pages this past offseason to raise money so that they could fly banners over the opposing team’s training camp grounds. The Cowboys’ banner, which read in all caps “We Still Dem Boyz! #SacksComin” flew high over Eagles training camp on Sunday, irking the 40,000 some fans that were there. But the Eagles fans had a plan of their own…they were getting ready to fly a banner stating “We got DeMarco”, in an effort to rub it in the faces of all Cowboys fans that they had stolen the team’s star running back.
Unfortunately, while putting the plan into action, disaster struck. Shortly after noon on Sunday, the pilot hired to fly the banner over the Cowboys training camp in Oxford, California crashed his plane during takeoff and was killed. The pilot, who was flying the single-engine plane solo, crashed on the runway of Compton-Woodley Airport and the plane immediately burst into flames.
Fans of both teams have decided to put their differences aside and come together to offer condolences to the pilot and his family. Eric Michael, the Eagles fan who started the GoFundMe page, has offered to give all the money raised in the campaign to the pilot’s family, and fans of both teams have been donating since the news broke.
So sad…may he rest in peace.
