A pit bull killed a 66-year-old man after he climbed through the window of his family’s Louisiana home.
According to Newsweek, the unidentified victim was found dead in his family’s home on Sunday, July 18, around 6:41 p.m. The New Orleans Police Department said they believe he was attacked and killed by the dog after climbing through the window to enter the home. The family said he was authorized to be there.
When police found his body, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The canine reportedly had blood on its body. The Louisiana Society for Preventing the Cruelty to Animals (LASPCA) took custody of the dog, Yahoo! News reports.
According to the National Pit Bull Victim Awareness (NPBVA), Pits have killed 11 people so far this year and 31 people in the first nine months of 2020.
While pit bulls are well-known for being aggressive dogs, certified dog behavior consultant and the American Pit Bull Foundation founder and CEO Sara Ondrako says the breed is actually bred to be “friendly.” She said pits are “innately no more likely to bite or attack humans.”
“They have been selectively bred over centuries to be human-friendly, despite also being bred for some dog-aggressive traits,” she added.
