The Pittsburgh Steelers have averaged 16.1 points through ten games, and President Art Rooney II’s meeting Monday evening solidified the change that needed to be made. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada was released from his duties.
After Sunday’s 13-10 Steelers loss to the Browns, it was evident the offense needed a change. They didn’t score until the third quarter, and this was the fourth week it looked like Kenny Pickett had regressed. Steeler Nation needed answers.
Head coach Mike Tomlin knew that after four years, it was time to move on to help his first-round pick from last year. Pickett needed assistance and it wasn’t going to be through the schematic scheme Canada had implemented.
“I did not come to this decision lightly,” Tomlin explained Tuesday per ESPN reporter Brook Pyor. “It’s my role to absorb and protect those that I work with. This doesn’t feel like that. I’m not assigning blame or deflecting in any way. … Just rest assured that this decision was not taken lightly. I’ve got a lot of respect for Matt personally and professionally.”
The Steelers will have a monumental divisional game against the Bengals this Sunday. They need a good offensive performance to keep up with Joe Burrow and Cincinnati’s high-powered offense.
