News rocked the NFL Monday as an unexpected trade between two AFC teams was announced—not by a team or insider, but by one of the players involved.
Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick were sent to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.
Ramsey broke the news himself on Twitter early Monday morning. The trade also comes with a $1.5 million raise for him, bringing the Tennessee native’s estimated salary to $26.6 million for the upcoming season.
Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick now returns to the team that originally drafted him in 2018, after spending several years with Pittsburgh. He has two years remaining on his four-year, $73.61 million contract.
The deal works for both teams: Jonnu Smith had been the subject of trade rumors for the past two seasons, and now the speculation has finally turned into action.
The Steelers now pair Smith with DK Metcalf, following the trade of wide receiver George Pickens—an effort to regain some of the offensive firepower lost this offseason. Smith also becomes another target for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is likely entering his farewell season at age 41.
Check out Jalen Ramsey’s tweet below, shared just after the trade was finalized.
