The cast of Pixar’s star-studded new movie has a lot of soul, that’s for sure.
Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey will lead the voice cast for Pixar’s upcoming animated feature ‘Soul,’ an original film, which is also Pixar’s first black-led animated film. ‘Soul’ aims to crack open the origins of our passions, dreams, and interests that make us all human, according to Pete Docter, the movie’s Academy Award-winning Director.
According to Variety, ‘Soul’ imagines that every person on earth comes pre-installed with a soul and it’s perfected in a cosmic realm. Foxx will star as Joe, a jazz-loving middle-school music teacher who dreams of playing at legendary New York jazz club ‘The Blue Note.’ He accidentally dies from falling through an open sewer grate and finds himself in the great hereafter, where souls are given personality traits before they move on to real humans.
Disney debuted a first look at the upcoming Pixar film at the ‘D23 Expo’ in California and announced its talented voice cast.
Following the announcement at the expo, Walt Disney Studios also tweeted out the first look some of the characters and a new piece of concept art.
Joining Foxx is Tina Fey as a character named 22, who is described as “a new soul with a loathing for earth.” She despises humans so much that she’s avoided Earth altogether. 22 and Joe eventually work together to find a way to get Joe back to Earth. “Joe’s adventure will make him think again about what it truly means to have soul,” said Docter.
Phylicia Rashad, Daveed Diggs, and Questlove will also join the cast. Rashad will play Joe’s mother; Questlove will play a character named Curly, the drummer in Joe’s band; and Diggs will play Paul, Joe’s neighborhood nemesis.
Like Pixar’s ‘Coco,’ ‘Soul’ is a musical movie and it is set to arrive in theaters on June 19, 2020.
