Greatness awaits, but we’re not talking about PlayStation 4, #PlayStation5 has officially entered the chat.
On Tuesday, PlayStation dropped a promo video for its ninth-generation home video console #PS5 with the caption “Welcome to 2020.” The new console, which is owned and produced by Sony, has been rumored to make an appearance but wasn’t officially confirmed until Tuesday.
Photos of 5’s prototypes were leaked online last year on November 30 and match the design patent that Sony registered in Brazil last year in August. The look is very futurist but also has an old school style. The console has a V-shaped top, a nod to the Roman numeral for 5, and has a thicker frame unlike its antecedent PlayStation 4.
However, what PlayStation 4 and 5 do have in common is the logo. Developers decided to keep the text style from PS4 but swapped in the number 5 at the end. The lack of change upset some fans. One user wrote, “Great to see that totally new #PS5 logo. Must have taken ages. #PlayStation5.” But other gamers mentioned that the style has been consistent over the years. “People talking about how bad the PS5 logo is…but it…looks like how it always has…lol.”
As far as new features, CNN reports that the console will have faster-loading speeds and improved audio. It will also support hardware ray-tracing for better graphics and an SSD hard drive for better access to games. The controller will be redesigned and has new and improved haptic feedback and tactile sensations, so players feel vibrations that match their gaming experience. “With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field. You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud,” Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote in the post. “One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games.”
Sony announced the console will be available for purchase during the holiday season of 2020. The company has declined to reveal how much the PS5 will cost, but if it’s anything like before, it will likely be around $499.
