A Texas man has been arrested in connection to the shooting of former baseball player David Ortiz.
Ortiz, well-known for his nickname, “Big Papi,” was mistakenly shot at a bar in the Dominican Republic on June 9. Police arrested a Texas man, named Victor Hugo Gómez, a resident of Katy and an associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel. Officials say Gómez hired hitmen to kill his cousin, Sixto David Fernández, whom Gómez suspected of turning him into investigators back in 2011.
“National Police have arrested Victor Hugo Gómez, one of the masterminds of the attack that injured the former baseball player David Ortiz,” the police tweeted Friday just before 11:30 a.m. Before the shooting, Gómez’s cousin, Fernández, was sitting next to Ortiz when a gunman approached him and fired a single shot at Ortiz.
So far, the man that is suspected to be the shooter is in custody and has been indicted on drugs and weapons charges unrelated to the shooting. Rolfi Ferreira-Cruz was arrested two weeks ago; he is also one of the several people that have been arrested in connection with the shooting. Authorities say Ferreira-Cruz had his name listed as Rolfy Ferreyra and has confessed to the shooting. Ferreira-Cruz also faces state charges in New Jersey in connection with two armed robberies in 2017.
